Every day that passes I check another item off my list of why Zuckerberg didn’t sell Facebook for $1 billion a few years back. Over the weekend I had a random future-thoughtâ„¢ about Facebook and it’s potential to harness facial recognition technology.
Remember the part in Minority Report where Tommy walks through the mall and all the advertising is targeted to him and his preferences based on a retinal scan? Good, I knew you’d remember. Now hang on to that thought.
Ok, next up is Facial Recognition technology like they do out in Vegas. You know you’ve seen it on Discovery Channel at some point when you were all excited about going to see 21.
Combine those two concepts with a worldwide photo database of real people with unique profiles and maybe we’re on to something. If only there were a system to help facilitate that? If so, don’t be surprised if one day you walk into Walmart and there is a little camera with a Facebook logo on helping guide you to things you didn’t realize you wanted to buy or updating your Facebook status to “Matt just bought a pack of Skittles at Walmart in Nashville.”
